A Comprehensive Guide to Flight Delay Compensation

Travelling is very stressful, but when something goes wrong that you can’t fix, it turns your trip into a nightmare. Flying has many problems that can arise, from mechanical issues to the weather. Any problem can lead to you being delayed, or missing your connection. Luckily you are able to get delayed flight compensation, so you can book a new flight or a place to stay until your next connection. Most flyers do not know about flight delayed compensation while they are travelling, and only find out about it after their trip. Here is how flight delayed compensation works, and why it is important for passengers.

Until 2004 and 2005, there was not any law about delayed flight compensation. This lack of compensation leads to huge problems for many passengers. Nearly all airlines were not efficient and did not care about the time that they arrived or left the airports. During 2004 and 2005, the laws have been imposed in the EU and the areas that were serviced by EU airplanes. These laws mean that delayed passengers are entitled to a number of things. If your flight is delayed by more than an hour, the delayed flight compensation is increased for every hour after that. If the flight has to be delayed for any reason until the next day, the law also has a clause for the amount of flight delayed compensation that passengers are entitled too. These laws have been upheld by courts in 2012, 2014 and 2015.

For a flight delayed over 5 hours, a passenger is entitled to a full refund of the airfare, and the ability to choose a different method to get to their destination. If the time period is shorter than 5 hours or there is another problem with the flight, a passenger has to make a claim within seven days.

How Much Is Delayed Flight Compensation?

The amount that you are able to get from delayed flight compensation depends on the type of flight, and the amount of time that the flight was delayed. In the EU, delayed flight compensation ranges from £110 to £510 depending on the cost of the flight. This means that if you have a budget ticket of under £110, you would only get the cost of the ticket. There is also the change that there will be upgrades, downgrades, and rerouting of flights that can inconvenience passengers even more.

The airline does not need to provide a customer delayed flight compensation in cash unless the customer is placed in a very unusual situation. Prior to the EU put in laws about flight delayed compensation, many airlines did not take the passenger rights very seriously. However, with the new laws and airlines not wanting to have to pay out huge amounts of compensation, most airports are running on time.
